PRIMARY FIVE ENGLISH TEACHERS GUIDE

Primary Five English marks an important transition into upper-primary literacy, helping learners build confidence, accuracy, and fluency in spoken and written English. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this course expands pupils' vocabulary, sharpens comprehension, and introduces practical grammar rules. By engaging with age-appropriate stories, dialogues, and functional writing tasks, learners develop the language skills needed to communicate effectively and excel across all subjects taught in English.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will explore practical thematic units designed to develop core language skills:

• Vehicle Repair and Maintenance: Vocabulary related to vehicles, tool names, reporting breakdowns, and using imperative structures to give mechanical instructions.
• Print Media: Navigating newspapers, magazines, headlines, advertisements, notices, and understanding public announcements.
• Travelling: Travel vocabulary, reading timetables, buying tickets, asking for directions, and describing journeys using past tenses.
• Letter Writing: Structuring informal/friendly letters, addressing envelopes, writing post cards, and using appropriate greetings and sign-offs.
• Grammar & Structure: Using tenses correctly (present perfect, past continuous, future), adverbs of frequency, prepositions of direction/place, conjunctions, and relative pronouns.
• Comprehension & Composition: Analyzing short reading texts, answering direct and inferential questions, sentence rearrangement, guided story writing, and simple vocabulary building
