Senior Six Woodwork Core Curriculum Structure

The Senior Six curriculum builds toward the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations. The syllabus revolves around major theoretical and high-intensity practical competence blocks:

1. Advanced Fixtures and Fittings (Term 1 Focus)

• Competency: Designing, layout out, and constructing advanced wooden fixtures and structural fittings.
• Scope: Focuses heavily on architectural joinery (doors, frames, roof beams, trusses, and cabinets).

2. Woodworking Machine Technology & Operations

Students transition from hand tools to heavy workshop machinery, studying machine anatomy, specific uses, and principles of operation for:

• Saws: Circular saws, band saws.
• Planers: Surface planers and thicknessers.
• Shapers & Routers: Spindle moulders, wood lathes, and mortising machines.
• Sanders: Belt and disc sanding machines.

3. Workshop Design & Machine Maintenance

• Workshop Layout: Organizing machine placement for smooth, efficient material workflow and minimum hazard.
• Maintenance Schedules: Developing and executing protocols for sharpening, lubricating, and tracking machine wear and tear.
• Safety & Statutory Regulations: Understanding legal workshop safe-practice parameters, protective gear implementation, and accident prevention protocols.

4. Mass Production, Templates & Jigs

• Using jigs, patents, and templates to achieve high-precision consistency during mass production runs.
• Material calculation, estimating timber yields, minimizing waste, and industrial scaling.
