PRIMARY SIX SOCIAL STUDIES (SST) LEARNERS GUIDE

Primary Six Social Studies expands the learner's geographical and historical horizons beyond Uganda to the broader region of East Africa. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this course integrates geography, history, civics, and economics under the overarching theme, "Living Together in East Africa." Through critical inquiry and map work, pupils explore the shared heritage, physical environments, cultural diversity, and economic linkages of East African countries, fostering regional identity, mutual understanding, and responsible citizenship.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will explore key thematic units covering the East African region (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and DRC):

• Location and Physical Features of East Africa: Using grid references, lines of latitude and longitude, map reading, and understanding physical features, climate zones, and natural vegetation across East Africa.
• The People of East Africa: Major ethnic groupings, migration routes, settlement patterns, historical social organizations, and cultural practices that bind the region together.
• Foreign Influence and Colonial Rule: Early trade contacts (Arabs and Europeans), exploration, missionary work, the scramble for and partition of East Africa, colonial administration methods, and the rise of nationalism leading to independence.
• Economic Development in East Africa: Agricultural systems, natural resources, mining, tourism, industrialization, and the role of regional integration bodies like the East African Community (EAC) in promoting trade and cooperation.
• Governance and Civic Education: Democratic processes, human rights, civic responsibilities, social services, and strategies for addressing common regional challenges such as climate change, poverty, and conflict.
