PRIMARY ONE ENGLISH TEACHERS GUIDE

Primary One English introduces young learners to the foundations of the English language through a child-centered, thematic approach. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) thematic syllabus, this course builds early communicative confidence by bridging oral local language skills with English literacy. Through songs, games, storytelling, and practical phonics exercises, pupils develop essential listening, speaking, pre-reading, and pre-writing skills needed to interact confidently in their new school environment.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will explore age-appropriate thematic units rooted in their immediate, everyday surroundings:

• Our School & Home: Learning basic greetings (Hello, Good morning), introducing themselves, naming classroom objects, and identifying family members and home items.
• Our Community & Environment: Vocabulary for common domestic animals, plants, weather conditions, and community places in their immediate surroundings.
• Body Parts & Health: Naming body parts, learning simple action verbs (wash, brush, sit, stand), and practicing basic personal hygiene terms.
• Phonics & Letter Sounds: Recognizing letter-sound relationships, initial sound blending, identifying simple letter shapes, and building foundational word recognition.
• Pre-Reading & Pre-Writing: Picture reading, left-to-right visual tracking, pattern tracing, letter formation, and writing simple two-to-three letter words.
• Basic Grammar & Language Structures: Simple command structures (Come here, Sit down), using this/that, simple present tense, and basic plural forms (cat/cats).
