PRIMARY FIVE SCIENCE LEARNERS GUIDE

Primary Five Integrated Science introduces upper-primary learners to active scientific investigation, environment management, and practical health education. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this course fosters curiosity and analytical skills by encouraging pupils to observe, experiment, and draw evidence-based conclusions. By connecting core scientific concepts to real-life situations in Uganda, learners gain practical skills to maintain personal health, practice sustainable agriculture, and care for their natural surroundings.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will explore essential scientific topics across health, biology, agriculture, and physical science:

• Human Body & Health: The digestive and respiratory systems, personal hygiene, sanitation, immunizable diseases, first aid, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
• Plant & Animal Life: Types of plants (flowering and non-flowering), seed germination, crop growing (poultry rearing and management), and the life cycles of beneficial and harmful insects.
• Environment & Conservation: Components of soil, soil erosion, soil fertility, water sources, purification methods, and environmental protection.
• Matter & Energy: States of matter, physical changes, properties of air, heat energy transfer (conduction, convection, radiation), and temperature measurement.
• Science in the Community: Simple machines, water supply management, and basic technological applications used in daily Ugandan life.
