PRIMARY FIVE MATHEMATICS LEARNERS GUIDE

Primary Five Mathematics serves as a vital bridge in upper primary education, strengthening foundational numeracy while introducing more formal logical reasoning and abstract mathematical concepts. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this course builds speed, accuracy, and confidence in problem-solving. Through practical exercises, pupils learn to apply mathematical principles to everyday tasks—such as financial transactions, spatial measurement, and data management—preparing them for higher-level quantitative learning.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will engage with core mathematical concepts organized across key strands:

• Sets & Numeration Systems: Set concepts, Venn diagrams involving two subsets, place values up to hundred thousands, expanded forms, and Roman numerals.
• Whole Numbers & Operations: Prime factorization, test for divisibility, finding LCM and HCF, number sequences, and solving multi-step word problems involving the four operations.
• Fractions & Decimals: Proper/improper fractions, mixed numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of fractions, and place values of decimal numbers.
• Commercial Arithmetic: Ugandan currency, buying and selling, calculating profit, loss, simple interest, and completing shopping bills.
• Algebra & Integers: Representing integers on a number line, operations on directed numbers, simplifying basic algebraic expressions, and solving simple linear equations.
• Geometry, Measurement & Data Handling: Properties of 2D shapes, measuring lines and angles, calculating perimeter and area, mass, capacity, time intervals, tally marks, and bar graphs.
