LITERATURE IN ENGLISH SENIOR FIVE LEARNERS GUIDE

Literature in English opens the learner’s mind to the power of language, imagination, culture, human experience, and creative expression. Through the study of poetry, prose, drama, and other literary forms, Senior Five learners are introduced to different voices, societies, conflicts, values, emotions, and ideas that help them understand both themselves and the world around them.

This Learner’s Guide has been developed to support learners as they begin their Advanced Level journey in Literature in English under the Competence Based Curriculum. It helps learners read texts actively, interpret meaning, analyse language, appreciate style, evaluate characters and themes, and express personal responses clearly and confidently.

Unlike ordinary reading, the study of Literature requires learners to think deeply about what writers say and how they say it. Learners are encouraged to examine plot, setting, characterisation, conflict, tone, imagery, symbolism, structure, dialogue, dramatic techniques, poetic devices, and the relationship between literature and society.

In line with the competence-based approach, this guide promotes critical thinking, communication, creativity, collaboration, empathy, cultural awareness, and independent judgement. It encourages learners to connect literary works to real-life experiences, moral choices, historical situations, social issues, and contemporary challenges.

Through guided notes, examples, activities, discussions, interpretation tasks, and examination-style questions, learners will develop the ability to read with understanding, think with maturity, argue with evidence, and write with clarity. They will also learn to appreciate Literature as a subject that builds confidence, imagination, emotional intelligence, and responsible citizenship.
