Art and Design develops creativity, visual communication, cultural understanding, and connections to society. It prepares learners of Senior One to think, make, and respond to art in ways that matter for the 21st century. The syllabus is built around seven interwoven units that spiral through the four years of Lower Secondary: Drawing and Painting, Graphic Design, Decorative Arts, Fabric Arts and Printmaking, Three-Dimensional Art, Integrated Crafts Projects, and Art Theory.
Learning unfolds in two complementary domains:1. Art Making – practical application of skills through selection and control of materials, media, and processes.2. Art Response – theoretical recall, understanding, and clear communication of knowledge about art. Through hands-on activities and critical reflection, learners build cognitive and vocational skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication. They also gain appreciation for Uganda’s cultural heritage and the role of art in identity, communication, and livelihood.
