Physical Chemistry is a branch of Chemistry that explains the principles governing chemical systems and processes using scientific laws, mathematical relationships, and experimental investigations. It bridges Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics to help learners understand how matter behaves and changes under different conditions.

At Advanced Level, the study of Physical Chemistry enables learners to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical, and practical laboratory skills that are essential for scientific innovation and national development. The course is aligned with the New Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) in Uganda, which emphasizes learner-centered approaches, creativity, communication, collaboration, and application of knowledge to real-life situations.

Throughout this course, learners will explore important concepts such as:

  • Thermodynamics
  • Chemical Kinetics
  • Electrochemistry
  • Chemical Equilibrium
  • Quantum Chemistry
  • Energetics
  • Atomic Structure
  • States of Matter
  • Statistical Thermodynamics

Learners will engage in practical investigations, experiments, research activities, discussions, and project work designed to strengthen scientific inquiry and independent learning. The course also encourages responsible citizenship, environmental awareness, and innovation in solving everyday challenges affecting society.

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  1. Apply scientific principles to explain physical and chemical phenomena.
  2. Conduct experiments safely and accurately.
  3. Analyze and interpret scientific data.
  4. Solve quantitative chemical problems logically.
  5. Relate Physical Chemistry concepts to industry, technology, medicine, agriculture, and environmental conservation.
  6. Develop competencies necessary for higher education and future careers in science and technology.

Physical Chemistry therefore equips learners with the knowledge, attitudes, values, and practical competencies required to become confident, innovative, and productive citizens in Uganda and beyond.
