Welcome to Senior Six Advanced Biology, a course that explores the fascinating science of life and prepares learners to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, and responsible citizens.
Biology is the study of living organisms and their interactions with one another and with the environment. It helps us understand how life functions from the molecular level of DNA and cells to the complex ecosystems that sustain life on Earth. As Uganda and the world continue to face challenges such as emerging diseases, food insecurity, environmental degradation, climate change, and biodiversity loss, biological knowledge has become more important than ever.
Under the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC), the study of Biology goes beyond memorizing facts. Learners are expected to investigate biological phenomena, analyse evidence, solve real-life problems, make informed decisions, and apply scientific knowledge in everyday life. Through practical activities, field studies, research projects, experiments, discussions, and innovation, learners develop competencies that are essential for higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.
In Senior Six, learners will deepen their understanding of key biological concepts including:
• Genetics and Inheritance
• Evolution and Natural Selection
• Ecology and Conservation
• Animal Behaviour
• Biotechnology and Modern Biological Applications
• Human Health and Disease
• Environmental Management and Sustainability
Throughout this course, learners will be encouraged to ask questions, investigate biological issues, interpret scientific data, communicate findings effectively, and appreciate the role of Biology in improving the quality of life in Uganda and beyond.
The knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes developed in this course will enable learners to contribute positively to their communities while preparing them for careers in medicine, agriculture, veterinary science, biotechnology, environmental science, education, research, pharmacy, public health, and many other fields.
As you embark on this exciting journey, remember that Biology is not merely the study of life—it is the study of the processes that sustain life and the solutions that can transform our future.
