ADVANCED ART AND DESIGN SENIOR SIX LEARNER’S BOOK

Art and Design in Senior Six is a subject of creativity, skill, imagination, critical thinking, and personal expression. At this level, learners are expected to move beyond basic artistic practice and begin developing mature, meaningful, and well-planned works of art that communicate ideas clearly and confidently.

Under the competence-based curriculum, Art and Design encourages learners to observe their environment, solve visual problems, experiment with materials, and produce original artworks that reflect both personal creativity and community experiences. The subject brings together drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, crafts, textile design, art history, and appreciation, helping learners understand how art connects with culture, identity, communication, innovation, and livelihood.

In Senior Six, learners build on the knowledge and skills gained in Senior Five by refining their techniques, developing stronger compositions, exploring advanced themes, and presenting art with greater purpose. They are guided to think like artists and designers: to research, plan, create, evaluate, improve, and communicate through visual language.

Art and Design also prepares learners for real-life opportunities in creative industries such as illustration, interior design, fashion, crafts, advertising, digital media, animation, product design, architecture, art education, and entrepreneurship. It nurtures confidence, patience, originality, problem-solving, and appreciation of Uganda’s rich artistic and cultural heritage.

By the end of Senior Six, learners should be able to create expressive and functional artworks, explain the meaning behind their work, appreciate the work of other artists, and use art as a tool for communication, innovation, and development.
