PRIMARY THREE LITERACY ONE LEARNERS GUIDE

Primary Three Literacy One introduces young learners to integrated social and environmental learning, bridging lower primary foundational concepts with upper primary Social Studies and Science. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this subject explores the immediate world around the learner through a thematic approach. By drawing content directly from the local environment, the course fosters critical observation, civic awareness, environmental stewardship, and problem-solving skills in an engaging, child-centered manner.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will explore practical thematic units centered on their sub-county or division:

• Our Sub-County / Division: Location, physical features, climate, vegetation, and historical background of the local area using simple map work.
• Livelihood in Our Sub-County: Economic activities, crops grown, domestic animals kept, local crafts, markets, and how people meet their basic needs.
• Environment and Weather: Elements of weather, seasonal variations, environmental protection, human activities affecting the environment, and conservation efforts.
• Social Services and Development: Key social service centers (schools, hospitals, police stations, transport networks), roles of community service providers, and practical ways to care for public utilities.
• Peace and Security: Rules and regulations at home, school, and community, roles of leaders, resolving simple conflicts, and maintaining personal safety.
• Culture and Gender in Our Sub-County: Cultural customs, beliefs, traditions, gender roles, and promoting harmonious living among diverse groups.
