PRIMARY THREE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS GUIDE

Primary Three Mathematics builds essential numerical fluency, spatial awareness, and practical quantitative skills as young learners transition toward upper-primary problem solving. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this course connects foundational arithmetic to daily life through visual representation and hands-on activities. By mastering basic operations, measurements, and simple data handling, pupils develop logical thinking, confidence, and accuracy in handling everyday mathematical situations.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will explore key foundational concepts organized across essential mathematical strands:

• Sets & Numeration: Concept of sets, Venn diagrams with basic intersections, place values up to thousands, counting, reading, and writing numbers in words and figures.
• Whole Numbers & Operations: Addition and subtraction of numbers up to four digits with and without regrouping, simple multiplication tables, and basic division.
• Fractions: Identifying, naming, representing, comparing, adding, and subtracting simple fractions with common denominators using concrete objects.
• Commercial Arithmetic & Money: Identifying Ugandan currency (coins and banknotes), converting money values, completing simple shopping bills, and calculating change.
• Measurement: Estimating, measuring, and comparing length, mass (weight), capacity, and time (reading clock faces, days of the week, and months of the year).
• Geometry & Data Handling: Identifying common 2D and 3D shapes, line types, completing simple patterns, collecting data, using tally marks, and interpreting simple picture graphs (pictographs).
