PRIMARY SIX MATHEMATICS TEACHERS GUIDE

Primary Six Mathematics plays a pivotal role in strengthening mathematical fluency, logical thinking, and real-world problem-solving skills as learners transition into upper primary. Aligned with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) syllabus, this course builds upon foundational numeracy to deepen understanding of abstract concepts, spatial relationships, and practical financial calculations. Through step-by-step reasoning and hands-on practice, pupils develop the confidence needed to handle complex quantitative tasks in school and daily life.

What Learners Will Study Throughout the course, learners will engage with key mathematical strands:

• Sets & Numeration Systems: Set concepts, Venn diagrams involving two subsets, place values up to millions, Roman numerals, and non-decimal base systems (including base five and base two).
• Whole Numbers & Operations: Prime factorization, test for divisibility, finding LCM and HCF, sequences, indices, and solving word problems using the four basic operations.
• Fractions, Decimals & Percentages: Operations on proper and improper fractions, converting fractions to decimals, recurring decimals, ordering fractions, and basic percentage calculations.
• Commercial Arithmetic & Money: Calculating cost price, selling price, profit, loss, simple interest, and solving everyday market and bill problems.
• Algebra & Integers: Direct and indirect directed numbers (integers on a number line), simplifying algebraic expressions, and solving linear equations.
• Geometry, Measurement & Data Handling: Angle properties, perimeter, area, volume of regular solids, circle measurements (circumference), tally marks, frequency tables, line graphs, and pie charts.
