SENIOR FIVE CHEMISTRY TEACHERS’ GUIDE

Welcome to Advanced Chemistry Senior Five. Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties and transformations of matter. At Advanced Level, learners build on the scientific knowledge and practical skills gained at lower secondary level and apply them to explain chemical processes that occur in everyday life, industry, agriculture, health, the environment and technology.

This course is developed in line with Uganda’s Competence Based Curriculum, which emphasises active learning, practical investigation, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, communication and the application of scientific knowledge to real-life situations. Learners are therefore encouraged not only to remember chemical facts and principles, but also to investigate, analyse evidence, carry out calculations, perform experiments safely, interpret observations and use chemistry to solve problems within their communities.

Throughout Senior Five, learners will explore important areas such as atomic structure, chemical bonding, the periodic table, energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox reactions, electrochemistry, organic chemistry, reaction kinetics and other fundamental concepts that prepare them for Senior Six and further scientific study. Practical activities, demonstrations, diagrams, models, calculations and locally relevant examples are used to make these concepts easier to understand and apply.

As you study Advanced Chemistry, approach every topic with curiosity and a willingness to investigate. Ask questions, make predictions, test ideas, discuss findings and relate chemical principles to situations around you. By the end of the course, you should be able to use chemistry knowledge and skills confidently, responsibly and creatively in academic work and in solving real-world problems.
