PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF AGRICULTURE SENIOR SIX LEARNERS GUIDE

Agriculture is one of the most important sectors in Uganda and the world at large. It provides food, employment, income, raw materials for industries, and opportunities for national development. For Senior Six learners, the study of Principles and Practice of Agriculture is not only preparation for examinations, but also preparation for real-life problem solving, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

This Learner’s Guide has been developed to support learners in understanding agriculture as a practical, scientific, economic, and transformative subject. It helps learners connect classroom knowledge to real agricultural situations such as crop production, animal production, soil management, farm planning, agricultural economics, mechanisation, agribusiness, environmental conservation, and food security. In line with the competence-based curriculum, this guide encourages learners to go beyond memorising facts. It promotes observation, investigation, critical thinking, teamwork, decision-making, creativity, and the application of knowledge to solve challenges faced by farmers and communities. Learners are guided to appreciate agriculture as a pathway to self-employment, enterprise development, improved livelihoods, and national transformation. Through practical activities, examples, illustrations, case studies, and assessment tasks, learners will develop the skills and values needed to participate meaningfully in modern agriculture. They will be able to analyse farming problems, suggest appropriate solutions, make informed decisions, and apply sustainable practices that protect the environment while improving productivity. As learners use this guide, they are encouraged to study actively, ask questions, practise regularly, relate every topic to their local environment, and view agriculture as a powerful tool for building a better future.
