Geography is the study of the Earth's physical features, human activities, and the dynamic relationships between people and their environment. At the Senior Six level, Geography goes beyond the description of places and landscapes to develop critical thinking, analytical, research, and problem-solving skills that enable learners to understand contemporary local, regional, and global issues.
In the Competence-Based Curriculum, Geography equips learners with the knowledge, values, attitudes, and practical competencies required to investigate geographical phenomena, interpret spatial patterns, analyse environmental challenges, and propose sustainable solutions. Learners are encouraged to connect classroom learning with real-life experiences through fieldwork, map interpretation, data analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and project-based learning.
Senior Six Geography places particular emphasis on understanding development, population dynamics, urbanisation, agriculture, industrialisation, environmental conservation, climate change, natural resource management, regional integration, and sustainable development. These themes help learners appreciate Uganda's place within Africa and the wider global community while preparing them to make informed decisions as responsible citizens.
Throughout this course, you will develop the ability to:
- Analyse interactions between physical and human environments.
- Apply geographical concepts to real-world situations.
- Interpret maps, satellite imagery, statistical data, and spatial information.
- Conduct geographical investigations using appropriate research methods.
- Evaluate environmental and socio-economic challenges from multiple perspectives.
- Recommend practical and sustainable solutions to geographical problems affecting communities.
Geography is more than the study of places—it is the science of understanding how our world functions and how human decisions shape the future of our environment and society. By the end of this course, you will have developed the competencies needed for higher education, research, planning, environmental management, policy analysis, disaster risk reduction, urban and regional planning, tourism, agriculture, and many other careers that contribute to national and global development.
Course Motto:
"Think Geographically, Analyse Critically, Act Sustainably, and Shape the Future."
